iPhone App: MeFree

In the course Mobile News App Design, I was part of a cross-discipline team that included two Computer Science students and one other Journalism student to create an app for iPhones. We created an app for simplifying the process of spontaneous meet ups - MeFree. The app allows users to set a status of free or busy and add text to say what they'd like to do or are busy doing. Users can add friends and see their friends' statuses to avoid the hassle of reaching out to multiple people to see who is free for hanging out.

In building this app I primarily worked on designing each page with Photoshop and co-managed social media.

Click here for a simulation of our final version of MeFree (though it didn't quite make it to the App Store by the semester's end).

Video 4

This was our final video before Demo Day, an event where each team in the class would showcase the app they created in the semester. For this video, we wanted to show a pain point many college students (our target audience) experience when they're looking for something to do, and how our app solves that pain point.

Photoshop

My primary responsibility on the team in addition to co-managing social media was creating mock ups of our app using Photoshop for the Computer Science students to use when coding. My Photoshop skills improved greatly through the semester, and each mock up became easier to create as the semester went on. While the app required some simpler designs in the end, I still created each icon needed for the app through Photoshop. For the mock ups I created, click here.

Social Media

Our best platform was Instagram, followed by Facebook. Our Twitter did not take off as we hoped, but we still posted milestones of our progress through the semester.

Highlights from all platforms can be seen here.

Social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter

Video 1

This was our very first video, filmed and created to introduce our app and give the audience a general idea of what it will do - help solve the problem of being bored and aimlessly reaching out to people to hang out.

Testimonial

“I had the pleasure of being Destinee's professor in two classes the University of Texas: Social Media Journalism and Mobile News App Design. She excelled in both by working hard, using her immense creativity and skills. In the social media class, Destinee mastered several platforms for journalistic uses, engaging the community and building up a brand. In the app class, she worked on a team that built an iPhone app. Destinee drove the design and user interface on the app for her team while learning new skills. She's a top performer who would be a great team member in any company.”
